Breeders' Cup Begins Against Backdrop Of Recent Horse Deaths

The Breeders' Cup kicks off today at Santa Anita Park, where the 14 horse races to be run over the next two days "promise plenty of drama, with great individual matchups and end-of-year honors on the line." But there is also an "underlying tension to this celebration of the breed, arising from the surge of horse deaths this year at the California racetrack" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 11/1). The Breeders' Cup is "always big," and always a "celebration of what's good in racing." Santa Anita is hosting for the 10th time in the event's 36-year history (DRF.com, 10/30).
