Blue Jackets Please Frenzied Crowd With Sweep Of Lightning

The Blue Jackets last night defeated the Lightning in Game 4 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs series to "complete what is arguably the most unlikely first-round playoff upset in the NHL's modern history." The eighth-seeded Blue Jackets, now in their 18th season, "hadn’t won a playoff series" prior. The top-seeded Lightning won 62 games, "tying an NHL regular-season record" (USA TODAY, 4/17). The game in Columbus drew a "raucous sellout crowd of 19,328." After the win, fans "went wild as 'CBJ' chants echoed around the building" (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 4/17). As the seconds ticked down at the end of the game, the Nationwide Arena crowd that "had been standing for the entire third period roared even louder, and the players celebrated wildly, spilling from the bench onto the ice" (AP, 4/17).

No one "saw this coming" for the Lightning (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 4/17). It is "already being called one of the biggest upsets in NHL history." The Blue Jackets are "only the second eight-seed to earn a sweep in the first round" (THEATHLETIC.com, 4/17).

Meanwhile, the Islanders completed a sweep of the Penguins last night in Pittsburgh, and their "swift victory" means Nassau Coliseum is now "closed for hockey until next season." The Islanders "will play home games in subsequent rounds at Barclays Center" (NEWSDAY, 4/17).
