Laugh Track: Kimmel-Gonzaga Heats Up

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel continued his campaign against Gonzaga last night by having a special group of officials on "from the hypothetical Gonzaga University." Kimmel: “Last week, I blew the lid off this whole Gonzaga is a real place myth that's been spread by the NCAA and CBS in order to boost their basketball tournament." Reps from the school who appeared on the show included IMG Sports Marketing GM Mark Livingston, Dir of Development Josh Cox, booster Ezekiel Brown and play-by-play announcer Tom Hudson. Kimmel: “The Easter bunny, Spider-Man, the tooth fairy and other imaginary characters are here with us tonight. So thanks for coming, I appreciate the effort. I'm still not buying it. Let me ask you this. If Gonzaga is so real, why does it sound so fake?” From the studio audience, Livingston replied, “We’re from Spokane. We think you’re fake, Matt Damon’s fake, everything in Hollywood is fake.” Kimmel: “You’re right on one of those things.” Kimmel also said the school "should change your mascot from the Bulldogs to the Catfish” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 3/27).

Late night hosts took issue with the Trump administration cutting federal funding for the Special Olympics. Comedy Central's Trevor Noah: "That just sounds mean because here's the thing: the $18 million that they're going to save isn't even that much money for a government. It's actually what the government spends for Trump to visit Mar-a-Lago five times" (“The Daily Show,” Comedy Central, 3/27). ABC’s Kimmel said “this is almost inconceivable” because in the “middle of what (Trump) calls the greatest economy of all time he has also decided to stop funding the Special Olympics.” Kimmel said of U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, "It's like she's auditioning to be the plot in Jordan Peele's next horror movie” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 3/27). CBS’ Stephen Colbert called DeVos “cartoon villain bad” after she defended the budget cuts because “these kids have had it too good for too long." Colbert: "Crayons and colored pencils?! What's next, markers?! I say we should go back to the old days where every child was sent into the quarry to cut their own piece of slate; then they’re issued a single piece of chalk and when it runs out, you're done with school! Back to the textile mill!” (“The Late Show,” CBS, 3/27).

CBS’ James Corden talked about the walk up music for Rangers SS Elvis Andrus, who “chose a rather unusual song” for this season. The broadcast then aired footage of Andrus walking up to the batter’s box with the popular children's song “Baby Shark” playing. Corden noted the song would also repeat "for the next nine hours inside everybody’s head” (“The Late Late Show,” CBS, 3/27).
