Tribune-Charter Carriage Dispute Yields Ill-Timed TV Blackout
Charter Communications "failed to sign a new programming contract with Tribune Media," leaving as many as 24 markets "affected by the TV blackout." Tribune "pulled its signal" yesterday at 5:00pm ET. The outage comes "days before" a weekend slate of NFL playoff games and Monday's CFP title game. Charter subscribers can "still watch the playoffs through other means," but the carriage dispute "threatens to disrupt a key television weekend" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/3). The previous contract expired late Monday night, but the two sides "agreed to a short-term extension to bridge the New Year's holiday." However, that deal expired yesterday afternoon (L.A. TIMES, 1/3).
