Arizona State's Anderson Bullish On School's Facility Renovations

Arizona State AD Ray Anderson yesterday afternoon said the school's multiyear renovation of Sun Devil Stadium reached its full potential only when the effort was enlarged to become part of a much larger and more comprehensive project. Anderson was speaking at the ’18 Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in N.Y. The four-year, $307M project, conducted in and around the school’s home football schedule, ultimately has become an anchor of the much more expansive Novus Innovation Corridor. That master plan is converting 330 acres of what was a golf course into various athletic facilities and mixed-use private development.

Meanwhile, Sun Devil Stadium itself is also becoming much more than the home for the football team and is hosting a wide variety of sports and corporate events, and will also be a site for the forthcoming AAF. Part of the inspiration for the larger effort, Anderson said, was Notre Dame’s Campus Crossroads Project, as were other mixed-used developments such as Patriot Place. “This is an opportunity to build an urban hub, a work-live-play environment with a core of that being athletic facilities,” Anderson said. “By opening up the facility (to additional uses), everyone can own a piece of the action."
