Seahawks, Trail Blazers Owner Paul Allen Dies At 65

Portland Oregonian

Seahawks and Trail Blazers Owner Paul Allen has died at age 65 from "complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, just two weeks after announcing he had restarted treatment for the cancer that he had previously fought off" in '09. Allen, whose sports interests are housed under his Vulcan holding company, was "known across the Puget Sound region for his generosity to social services and deep love of sports and the arts." He "poured his resources into two of his passions: sports and music," having "established the Experience Music Project, now called MoPOP" (SEATTLE TIMES, 10/16).

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, "His passion for the game, combined with his quiet determination, led to a model organization on and off the field. Our league is better for having Paul Allen be a part of it" (USA TODAY, 10/16). NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in a statement said, "Paul brought a sense of discovery and mission to every league matter large and small" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/16).

Allen’s death "raises questions about what happens to the two sports franchises" he owns. Allen had "no spouse and no children to leave anything to." It is unclear if Allen’s sister, First & Goal Vice Chair Jody Allen, “wants to take over ownership of the Seahawks and Trail Blazers, or one or both" (SEATTLE TIMES, 10/16). Jody Allen is a "Seahawks fan and is a good bet to emerge as a more visible presence" with the organization. Nobody who knows her "thinks she'd be interested in wanting to run an NBA franchise on a daily basis" (Portland OREGONIAN, 10/16).
