At Senate Hearing, U.S. Gymnasts Say Risk Of Sex Abuse Remains

USA Gymnastics, USOC and Michigan State officials continued to "face criticism for their handling of sexual abuse cases" during a U.S. Senate hearing yesterday. USAG President Kerry Perry acknowledged "flaws in policies in which some coaches under investigation for sexual misconduct offenses continued to have supervised contact with minor aged athletes" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 7/25). Perry said that USAG is "sorry that Dr. Larry Nassar abused so many gymnasts." She added that it is now "easier to report abuse." But U.S. gymnast Ashton Locklear, who was abused by Nassar, said, "Nothing has changed." She said that athletes are "still at risk." Fellow gymnast Aly Raisman said that athlete victims "do not feel supported in their relationships with Olympic sports organizations and universities" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/25).
