Protests Disrupt NBA Kings Game; Ranadive Expresses Support

Hundreds of protesters demonstrating against the shooting of an unarmed black man surrounded Golden 1 Center prior to last night's Hawks-Kings game and blocked "most ticket holders from entering the downtown arena." The Kings "delayed the start of the game" but did not cancel it, and the the teams "tipped off in a largely empty" arena. Only about 2,000 people out of "more than 17,000 ticket holders took their seats." The team said that fans who "purchased tickets directly" through the Kings or Ticketmaster "will receive instructions on how to receive a full refund" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 3/23).

Kings Owner & Chair Vivek Ranadive "took center court" after the game to "acknowledge that this night turned into something bigger than basketball." Ranadive, flanked by the team and front office staff, said, "We at the Kings recognize your people's ability to protest peacefully, and we respect that. ... We have a big platform. It's a privilege but it's also a responsibility. It's a responsibility we take really seriously. We stand before you -- old, young, black, white, brown -- and we are all united in our commitment. We recognize that it's not just business as usual" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 3/23).
