U.S. To Miss '18 World Cup After Disastrous Loss In Qualifier

The USMNT is out of the '18 FIFA World Cup after a 2-1 loss to Trinidad & Tobago "before a few thousand observers in a lonely little stadium" on the island nation. The U.S. "played a shameful first half," and with the loss "fell to fifth place in the six-team regional competition." In their "most important qualifier in years ... the Americans flopped" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/11).

SI.com calls this the "most embarrassing failure in U.S. Soccer history." THE RINGER: "The latest national men's soccer fiasco is the most acute, and disastrous, in decades, maybe ever." USATODAY.com writes the USMNT "gave a nation the lowest point in its sporting history, and it's not really close."
