FIFA Officials Arrested For Corruption, Face Extradition To U.S.

Swiss authorities this morning conducted an "extraordinary early-morning operation" in Zurich to arrest several top FIFA officials, who now face extradition to the U.S. on federal corruption charges. The charges, "backed by an FBI investigation, allege widespread corruption in FIFA over the past two decades, involving bids for World Cups as well as marketing and broadcast deals." The indictment names 14 people, including sports-marketing execs from the U.S. and South America, on charges such as "racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/27).

Meanwhile, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice announced that "criminal proceedings have been opened in connection with the award" of the '18 and '22 World Cups. All 10 members of the FIFA Exec Committee who took part in the bidding process in '10 will be questioned "as part of the investigation" (ESPNFC.us, 5/27).
