World Cup Helps Drive Up Twitter's Average Monthly Users In Q2

Twitter reported average monthly users were 271 million as of June 30, up 24% from a year ago, "beating Wall Street analyst estimates of 265 million monthly active users for Q2." Twitter CEO Dick Costolo on the Q2 earnings call "highlighted the 2014 FIFA World Cup as driving up Twitter usage," but he also said that "product changes were the primary growth factors." Twitter "gained a net 16 million monthly active users in Q2, the most in five quarters" (VARIETY.com, 7/29).

The World Cup “illustrated Twitter’s greatest strength and its biggest weakness: As with the cable news networks, its traffic is dependent on surges of public interest around real-time events” (N.Y. TIMES, 7/30).
