Columbia, S.C., Opts To Borrow Money For Minor-League Ballpark

The Columbia (S.C.) City Council yesterday gave its "final major endorsement" to build a $35M minor-league ballpark, voting to "commit the city to borrowing that much money and repaying it with meal taxes for the next 30 years." Atlanta-based Hardball Capital, the company the city has hired to run the venue, is investing $6M of its money in the construction of the planned 8,500-seat facility. Hardball Capital Owner Jason Freier filed paperwork with MiLB "seeking permission to move a team to Columbia" (Columbia STATE, 7/16).
