U.S. District Court Judge Kimba Wood yesterday dismissed a claim that New York's ban on MMA "violates the First Amendment." Wood "did leave UFC some hope" of overturning the ban by leaving open in the complaint an argument that the ban is "unconstitutionally vague" (N.Y. POST, 10/2).

N.Y.-based Winston & Strawn LLP is “starting what it describes as the first college-focused division at a major law firm to represent players, coaches, schools and conferences” against the NCAA. Former NFLPA outside counsel Jeffery Kessler is a partner in the firm (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 10/1).

The OAKLAND TRIBUNE’s Monte Poole today pens his last column for the newspaper under the header, “Thank You For Reading All These Years.” Poole is joining Comcast SportsNet next week (OAKLAND TRIBUNE, 10/2).

Construction at Curitiba’s ’14 FIFA World Cup stadium has been suspended “due to numerous and serious safety breaches.” Work is behind schedule at the venue and a Brazilian labor tribunal said that a “new inspection would have to be carried out before it could re-start” (REUTERS, 10/2).

The MLB Cardinals today are expected to announce that the Argentina national soccer team will play an int’l friendly at Busch Stadium on Nov. 18. Argentina will play Bosnia and Herzegovina, “as long as Bosnia has already qualified for the World Cup by then” (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 10/2).

A crowd of 17,608 attended the DC United-Real Salt Lake U.S. Open Cup final at Rio Tinto Stadium (DESERET NEWS, 10/2).
