Arthur Ashe Auction Concludes On 20th Anniversary Of His Death
The 20th anniversary of Arthur Ashe's death today also marks the conclusion of an online auction of a "trove of items" from Ashe's estate. The items reflect "nearly every facet of Ashe’s life" and include Wimbledon and U.S. Open trophies, a high school tennis trophy, his UCLA letter sweater, his U.S. Davis Cup jacket, '75 Wimbledon diary, handwritten speeches about black athletes and AIDS and "numerous personal items, including his wisdom teeth." A portion of the proceeds will benefit the N.Y.-based Arthur Ashe Learning Center (WASHINGTON POST, 2/3).
Meanwhile, Lagardere Group President Donald Dell, who served as Ashe's longtime manager/attorney, pens a tribute to the late Tennis HOFer in the N.Y. TIMES.
