Roger Penske Really Did Offer Tony Stewart A Spot In '13 Indy 500

Roger Penske appears to have made an "actual offer" to Tony Stewart to drive in the Indianapolis 500 next year. Penske, while accepting the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series trophy Friday night in Las Vegas and "lauding Stewart," uttered "what seemed like a throwaway line." Penske said, "How about doing the double at Indy this year? Are you available?" Later, when "given the chance to shrug it off," Penske "insisted he was very serious" (AP, 12/2).

The Sprint Cup Awards Ceremony as a whole featured a "master of ceremonies and entertainers whose presence might seem odd." Howie Mandel was the emcee, and performers included Train, Lifehouse, Natasha Bedingfield and Phillip Phillips (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 12/1).
