David Stern Calls Spurs' Decision To Rest Starters "Unacceptable"
The NBA plans to make the Spurs "pay for resting four stars" in last night's 105-100 loss to the Heat in a nationally televised game, as the decision by coach Gregg Popovich "irked NBA Commissioner David Stern." Stern in a statement released close to tipoff said, "I apologize to all NBA fans. This was an unacceptable decision by the San Antonio Spurs and substantial sanctions will be forthcoming." TNT carried the game (AP, 10/29).
Spurs fans reportedly "were furious" at Popovich’s decision to rest four of his top five scorers: C Tim Duncan, G Tony Parker, G Manu Ginobili and G Danny Green. Basketball purists "took to Twitter to express dismay." But Popovich said, "It’s the best thing for our team" (MYSANANTONIO.com, 11/29).
