U.S. Olympians Begin Making Rounds On Late Night Television

The onslaught of Olympic athletes making the talk show rounds has begun, with Jimmy Fallon, Jay Leno and David Letterman all playing host last night to Gold Medal winners.

Gymnast Gabby Douglas appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” last night and said she celebrated her Gold Medal in London by splurging "on an Egg McMuffin at McDonald’s.” First Lady Michelle Obama, who was on the show promoting her “Let’s Move!” initiative to battle childhood obesity, said, “I’m sure it was a whole wheat McMuffin. You’re setting me back, Gabby.” Douglas said she was “definitely” going to compete at the '16 Rio de Janeiro Games, to which Leno said, “So it’s four years till your next Egg McMuffin” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 8/13).

U.S. decathlete Ashton Eaton appeared on CBS’ “Late Show” last night and halfway through the interview, Eaton said to host David Letterman, “You have the wrong guest actually.” Letterman asked, “What happened?” Eaton: “I do the food decathlon. I eat ten different items, as much as I can. I don't do ten sports. Wrong guy.” Letterman replied deadpan, “They don’t give a Gold Medal for comedy.” When asked if he wanted to wear the Gold Medal, Letterman said, “Again, it’s one of these deals where I couldn’t feel like a bigger loser” (“Late Show,” CBS, 8/13).

Team USA G James Harden and F Kevin Durant appeared together on NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” last night and host Jimmy Fallon noted the team stayed at a hotel instead of the Olympic Village. Fallon: "I pictured like a ‘Real World’ where you guys are all in bunk beds.” Durant: “I wanted to stay at the Village. I just wanted to get the whole experience” (“Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” NBC, 8/13).
