Record Turnout For Sports Lawyers Association Conference In DC

The 37th annual Sports Lawyers Association conference continues today in DC with a focus on labor issues, including collective bargaining and head trauma issues in sports. Bob Batterman, the outside legal counsel to the NFL, and NFLPA outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler were originally scheduled as panelists today, but both cancelled due to the ongoing NFL lockout and the players' antitrust suit against the NFL. Replacing them will be Gary Roberts, Dean of the Indiana Univ. School of Law, Indianapolis, who formerly worked for the NFL's longtime law firm, Covington & Burling, and Mark Levinstein, a partner at DC law firm Williams & Connolly.

The conference has drawn a record attendance of 670, with more attendees expected to arrive today, said SLA President Bob Wallace, the former general counsel of the Rams.
