Source: John Dorsey Joining Lions As Senior Personnel Exec

Dorsey's deal is not finalized but no impediments are expected, the move likely will be announced this weekGETTY IMAGES

Former Chiefs and Browns GM John Dorsey has "agreed to join the Lions as a senior personnel executive," according to a source cited by Dave Birkett of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Dorsey's deal is "not yet finalized," but "no hang-ups are expected to keep it from happening and the move likely will be announced this week." Dorsey "will serve as a sounding board" for first-year Lions GM Brad Holmes. With the Chiefs, Dorsey "built much of the roster that won Super Bowl LIV." Meanwhile, NFL Network yesterday reported that the Lions also are "expected to add" Rams Dir of Pro Scouting Ray Agnew to their personnel department as assistant GM. Agnew worked with Holmes the past four seasons in L.A. (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 1/25).

MOVING ON AT QB: ESPN.com's Adam Schefter cited sources saying that Lions QB Matthew Stafford is "expected to not return" to the team this offseason, with the team "listening to trade offers starting this week." Sources said that the Lions are "expected to receive at least a first-round pick" for Stafford (ESPN.com, 1/23). In Detroit, Jeff Seidel wrote, "All I can say is: Wow. I didn’t think the Lions would have the guts to make this kind of move." The decision to move on from Stafford is an "encouraging sign that the entire organization, from ownership to the front office to the coaching staff, can see what is so obvious: This team needs a complete rebuild, not a quick makeover." Seidel: "This franchise is a mess and it’s years from being good again." More Seidel: "This is how you break from mediocrity. This is how you build something special. By making tough decisions. Thinking long term" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 1/24).

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE: In Detroit, Shawn Windsor wrote the recent organizational change for the Lions "isn’t just about winning games," but about "changing the perception of the franchise." New coach Dan Campbell was "endearing, at least to most," during his introductory press conference last Thursday. He also was "raw and charismatic and forceful." Lions Owner Sheila Ford Hamp is "sick and tired of how folks think about her team," about "how this community thinks about the franchise." One "could hear that in almost everything she said last week." In hiring Campbell and Holmes, Ford Hamp "isn’t just banking on their ability to connect and identify talent and assemble staffs to draw up game plans and develop players in the offseason," she is "banking on herself, and on her own vision of what a competent and compelling organization looks and sounds like." She is "betting -- and hoping -- you will notice" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 1/24).
