Capitals Unveil Navy Blue Sweater For Third Jersey Design

Capitals placed an emphasis on the "W" in the middle of the sweater, representing WashingtonCAPITALS

The Capitals today will unveil their new third jersey design, which will be worn by players in seven home games in ‘20-21 and through the ‘22-23 campaign. The navy blue sweater is modeled after the jersey worn in the ‘18 Stadium Series game against the Maple Leafs at the U.S. Naval Academy. Washington will wear the uniforms for the first time tomorrow night against the Islanders. "When you look at our color scheme of uniforms over the years, certainly red and white have been dominant, but nothing describes Washington, D.C. more than truly red, white and blue,” said Capitals President of Business Operations Jim Van Stone. He explained that the red represents passion and dedication, white is loyalty and blue is community. The Capitals placed an emphasis on the "W" in the middle of the sweater, representing Washington. The point in the letter symbolizes the Washington Monument, he said. With the three stars, they also represent the surrounding region: from left to right, Maryland, D.C. and Virginia.

BIGGER MEANING: "With all that we’ve been through over the course of the last year ... there’s no more important time than ever to bring people together," Van Stone said. "That’s what hockey does really, really well. Blue, for us, signifies community, and we all want to rally around our individual communities." For third jersey games, which will be sponsored by Capital One, the Capitals will honor a frontline worker as the Blue Star of the Game. The recognized individual will receive a third jersey and be honored in the team’s starting lineup. Capitals CMO Hunter Lochmann and VP/Marketing Amanda Tischler led the jersey design efforts on the business front, in collaboration with Owner Ted Leonsis and Senior VP/Strategic Initiatives Zach Leonsis. Senior VP and GM Brian MacLellan and Vice Chair & President Dick Patrick also weighed in on the new third jersey in addition to players and coaches. Adidas Design Director for Hockey Matty Merrill spearheaded efforts for Adidas in working directly with the Capitals.
