Hurricanes President Believes Team Will Play Full 56-Game Schedule

Hurricanes President & GM Don Waddell said that he believes the team will be "able to make up games postponed because of COVID-19 issues and was hopeful the Canes could play again next week," according to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. Waddell on Thursday indicated that the NHL is "working on readjusting the Canes’ schedule and that it might result in playing five games in seven nights." He said that the league will "try to avoid playing three games in three days." Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said, "We all understood there was a chance something like this was going to happen. You just look at all the other sports, it’s rare to find a team it didn’t affect in some way or another. It’s not really about was it going to happen but how you deal with it." Waddell said that rapid testing machines for coronavirus were being "installed in PNC Arena." Alexander reports players will be "spaced out in the locker room area." Waddell: "We’ve done everything we can possibly do and you just can’t control it. We have to figure out how to get it out of the locker room and make sure we keep our environment safe for our players" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 1/22).

NOT THINKING ABOUT PLAYING LESS: TSN's Pierre LeBrun noted the NHL “has not made a determination" of what would happen if a team has too many games postponed and cannot finish the full 56-game schedule. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly indicated that he "expects all 31 teams to play 56 games." LeBrun noted until the league gets to a point "where it sounds like there’s evidence that may not happen, then they’ll look at all their options and then make a determination." However, league officials "don't want to make one on a hypothetical” (“Insider Trading,” TSN, 1/21).
