Ryder Cup Hopes To See Over 40,000 Daily Fans At Whistling Straits

PGA of America and Destination Kohler operators will continue to monitor the situation to keep attendees safeGETTY IMAGES

The rescheduled Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin "will be able to welcome 40,000-plus fans each day," as the COVID-19 pandemic "will have eased considerably before fall of 2021," according to Jason Lusk of GOLFWEEK. Destination Kohler Dir of Golf Operations Michael O'Reilly said that for now, the PGA of America and Destination Kohler operators "will continue to monitor the situation and learn everything available to keep players and fans safe." O'Reilly said, "There's a lot of golf tournaments to be played between now and late September. ... We have the opportunity ... to learn a lot along the way, and as things change and evolve, for us to pivot. But as of right now, that's what we're hoping for, full attendance and full corporate hospitality" (GOLFWEEK.com, 1/21).

QUEEN CITY VIEWS: In Charlotte, Erik Spanberg noted the Presidents Cup still is "coming to Charlotte's Quail Hollow Club," but in '22. The event was originally scheduled for this fall, but delayed a year due to the Ryder Cup being pushed back. Presidents Cup Exec Dir Adam Sperling said that the event "has commitments so far from between 100 and 150 companies for tickets, suites and sponsorships." He added that organizers have "enlisted representatives in Raleigh and Florida to target prospective customers beyond the Charlotte region." Much of the recent discussion involved "updating corporate customers and seeing whether those companies would maintain their commitments." Sperling said that all of the companies "agreed to stay on despite the date change." Without disclosing specifics, Sperling said that "new sales in 2020 exceeded expectations." Spanberg noted all 12 of the highest-priced hospitality packages -- Presidential Suites with capacity of 75 to 100 people -- "are sold out." Individual tickets for the Green Mile Club -- in the range of $10,000 for the week -- are "also all gone" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 1/21).
