Michigan Will Offer Online Sports Betting Starting Friday

The Michigan Gaming Control Board authorized nine casinos and their platform providers to go live with online gaming and sports betting, according to Ryan Zuke of MLIVE.com. They will "launch on Friday, just in time for Sunday’s NFL conference championship games," though it comes "more than 12 months after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill to legalize online gaming." MGCB Exec Dir Richard Kalm said that the next few days will give operators and platform providers "additional time for testing and adjustments before the gaming goes live." Zuke noted "only licensed casinos in Michigan -- the 24 tribal casinos and three Detroit casinos -- are allowed by law to offer online gaming and sports betting." With pro teams in all four major sports and two prominent colleges in Michigan and Michigan State, the state is "expected to be a prosperous market for operators" (MLIVE.com, 1/19).
