NFL Franchise Notes: Broncos GM Paton Adjusting To New Structure

New Broncos GM George Paton said that President & CEO Joe Ellis "eliminated any concerns about how the Broncos would be run under new ownership -- either Brittany Bowlen or an outside buyer." In Denver, Ryan O'Halloran notes Paton's six-year contract "also helped." Paton: “Joe was completely upfront about the ownership situation. It’s not a concern of mine. They have everything here to win and they have great leadership with Joe.” Paton will have "final say on personnel and lead the front office." President of Football Operations John Elway has "one year left on his contract and will be an on-call executive to serve as a sounding board and evaluator for Paton" (DENVER POST, 1/20).

POWER SHIFT: In Detroit, Justin Rogers notes the Lions have "made slight alterations to the power structure at the top of the organization" with the hiring of GM Brad Holmes and the impending hire of a new coach. Going forward, the GM, coach and VP/Football Administration Mike Disner, who will have an expanded role going forward, "will all directly report" to President Rod Wood and Owner Sheila Ford Hamp. Disner, who joined the Lions in '19 and was the chief contract negotiator, will "see his responsibilities grow within the new setup to free Holmes to focus on the roster." The "final piece to the puzzle" is Chris Spielman, who served as an adviser during both the coaching and GM searches (DETROIT NEWS, 1/20).

FALCONS FLYING HIGH: In Atlanta, Mark Bradley writes new Falcons GM Terry Fontenot is a "star" and is the "sort of person who’d have succeeded at whatever he tried." Bradley: "This correspondent feels more optimistic about the Falcons today than in 37 years of tracking them, and it’s not because they have a new coach." Although Arthur Smith is a "solid choice" as coach, it is "because they have Fontenot." In his introduction, Fontenot "said everything I’d ever wanted to hear from a Falcons GM." Bradley: "Nothing, thank heaven, sounded like a slogan. It all sounded real" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 1/20).
