Kevin Harlan's Home Studio Shows TNT's Broadcasting Flexibility

TNT's Kevin Harlan "finds himself today calling NBA games in a 15 x 8 broadcasting studio from the bottom of his century-old home in Mission Hills, Kan.," according to Richard Deitsch of THE ATHLETIC. There is an eight-foot "NBA on TNT" banner behind him when he's calling games that is "both for branding purposes and so Turner Sports can have a uniform background for all its NBA announcers." There also are "production-quality lights installed above Harlan when he's calling games so viewers can see him for on-camera shots." Additionally, there are "two 32-inch monitors on a rectangular folding table in front of where Harlan sits." The other monitor is "split into four small screens, which Turner Sports production people refer to as a quad box." The bottom right quad image allows Harlan to "see a live shot of his analyst, which is usually Reggie Miller or Grant Hill." Miller is "working from a studio in Burbank, Calif.," and Hill "has a home studio in Orlando." Harlan also has an iPad which "connects him to his remote statisticians." In many ways, what Harlan is doing "will serve as an unexpected experiment for the future of sports broadcasting." Turner Sports "opted to have its NBA broadcasters start the season away from the arenas," and the company gave Harlan and his colleagues "the option of calling games from a studio near their homes or at their homes" (THEATHLETIC.com, 12/29).
