People & Personalities: Sportsnet, Wilner Split Comes As Surprise

THE ATHLETIC's Sean Fitz-Gerald noted Sportsnet last Friday announced it was "parting ways" with Blue Jays radio play-by-play voice Mike Wilner after two decades, in a move that "caught co-workers off guard." No reason "was given for the decision, and no replacement was named." A spokesperson for parent company Rogers said that Sportsnet "would announce its new Blue Jays radio broadcast team before the start of next season" (THEATHLETIC.com, 11/27).

SOUTH FLORIDA SIGN-OFF: In Miami, Barry Jackson reported WSVN-Fox' Steve Shapiro is "retiring at the end of December." WSVN-Fox "already has hired his replacement: Josh Moser, who most recently worked at the Fox affiliate in Green Bay." Shapiro has "anchored and reported sports in South Florida for 30 years -- longer than anyone else in the market’s history." He joined the Fox affil in '97 after a previous stint at what now is WFOR-CBS (MIAMI HERALD, 11/28).

SO LONG, FAREWELL: In Massachusetts, Bill Doyle wrote, "More than 40 years of working for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette as a full-time reporter, mostly as a sports reporter, comes to an end on Tuesday for me. I’m taking a buyout" (Worcester TELEGRAM & GAZETTE, 11/29).
