Dodgers Implement Layoffs After Financial Losses From Pandemic

The Dodgers have "issued layoffs across the organization," citing "significant economic losses as a result of the coronavirus pandemic," according to Jorge Castillo of the L.A. TIMES. The team, valued at $3.4B, had the second-highest payroll in '20 and have "been in the top five in payroll every year" since '13. But Dodgers President Stan Kasten said that the franchise lost "well north of $100 million this year." Meanwhile, Kasten said that he expects the '21 season "will be played without fan limitations at stadiums." However, Dodgers co-Owner Todd Boehly in October said that he "doesn't believe the fan experience will return to normal until 2022" (L.A. TIMES, 11/19). In California, Bill Plunkett notes the job cuts are "believed to be at least 40 to 50 in all, from virtually every department." The Dodgers had already "declined to renew the contracts of a handful of scouts when they expired at the end of September" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 11/19). ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne noted the Dodgers had "previously cut salaries of their highest-paid employees" (ESPN.com, 11/18).
