Cubs Prize Organizational Continuity With Jed Hoyer Appointment

Terms of Hoyer's new role as Cubs President of Baseball Operations have not been announcedGETTY IMAGES

Patience is one of Jed Hoyer's "strong suits," and "that quality paid" off with Tuesday's announcement that he will replace Theo Epstein as Cubs President of Baseball Operations, according to Paul Sullivan of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Hoyer said that he was "fine with his status as Epstein's second in command and always felt one day he would be running a team on his own." Although he has been mentioned for other vacancies over the years, Hoyer "never budged" from the Cubs. Terms of Hoyer's deal have "not been announced," but he "figures to be here for at least five years, the length of Epstein's two deals." That would give Hoyer until '25 to "win a World Series on his own, starting with the upcoming remake of the roster" for the '21 season. Fans will "get his thoughts on the next general manager" soon, and whether he "stays inside the organization or finds a young executive from elsewhere, Hoyer will be the one making the big decisions, as Epstein did the last nine years" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/19).

READY TO GO HIS OWN WAY: In Chicago, Maddie Lee noted for the first time in almost a decade, Hoyer and Epstein "will no longer be coworkers," and the job of "ushering the club into a new era will fall to Hoyer." Working together all these years has "not morphed Hoyer and Epstein into the same person." The two have "at times approached team-building from different angles." The past couple years especially, Epstein has seen Hoyer "expand his relationships within the organization and involve himself in the center of every important discussion." Epstein said that Hoyer was "'instrumental' in restructuring the Cubs' scouting and player development departments" (NBCSPORTSCHICAGO.com, 11/18).

EPSTEIN A WANTED MAN: THE ATHLETIC's Patrick Mooney wrote Epstein is "going to be linked to the Mets and Phillies and potentially any chief-level job that opens within the industry, all the way up to commissioner of Major League Baseball." That speculation "won't be limited to baseball, either, because Epstein is creative, passionate and young enough to do whatever he wants with the rest of his life." But Epstein's next move "won't simply be tied to what's open during this hiring cycle." Steve Cohen's Mets already "made their Theo-level move by bringing back Sandy Alderson." The Phillies "could try to make Epstein an offer he can’t refuse, but he has no real connections there and won’t be motivated entirely by money." Mooney: "The most common guess is that he will pursue an ownership stake somewhere in baseball. The kind of ownership group that Epstein would want to lead can't be thrown together" (THEATHLETIC.com, 11/18).
