Marlins Make History In Hiring Kim Ng As Club's Next GM

The Marlins this morning announced the hiring of MLB Senior VP/Baseball Operations Kim Ng as their next GM, making her the "first female GM" of an MLB team, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Ng’s hiring by the Marlins "will be historic." She served as Assistant GM with the Dodgers and Yankees, and she "obviously knows" Marlins CEO Derek Jeter and VP/Player Development & Scouting Gary Denbo well from their Yankees days. This is a "breakthrough hire" in MLB (TWITTER.com, 11/13). YAHOO SPORTS' Cassandra Negley notes Ng also will become the "first Asian-American GM in the league." Ng becomes the "highest-ranking woman in baseball operations among any MLB team." She comes to the Marlins with "more than 30 years of experience in the major leagues" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 11/13). BLEACHER REPORT's Mike Chiari notes Ng is "believed to be the first female GM in any of the four major North American sports leagues" (BLEACHERREPORT.com, 11/13).

A HISTORIC DAY: MLB.com's Alyson Footer: "Let's be perfectly clear here. Kim Ng has been among the most qualified GM candidates for the past two decades. She has always been capable of running a Major League team. This isn't a risky hire -- it's a smart one, by a team that obviously wants to win a World Series." The Athletic's Britt Ghiroli: "30-plus years of experience in a sport where hot-shot GM's in their 30s is a thing. This isn't diversity for diversity's sake, Kim NG is OVER QUALIFIED." Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal: "An entire sport is rejoicing. Virtually everyone in baseball thinks Kim Ng, former assistant GM of Yankees and Dodgers, is a great choice to run the Marlins. A‘ s assistant GM Billy Owens: 'Kim is an AWESOME hire! Truly pumped to hear the news. Groundbreaking and well-deserved.'” MLB Net's Jon Morosi: "Kim Ng has 3 World Series rings. She made 8 postseason appearances as an executive. She was assistant GM of the #Yankees and #Dodgers, then spent a decade in the Commissioner’s office. Objectively speaking, she has one of the greatest résumés of any first-time GM in @MLB history." The Athletic's Lindsey Adler listed Ng's path to the Marlins and wrote, "That is what we call a Baseball Lifer."
