Breeders' Cup Weekend Arrives On Schedule, But Without Fans

Steps were taken to provide TV and digital viewers with an extensive production of the races at KeenelandGETTY IMAGES

The Breeders' Cup World Championships "will take place as scheduled" on Friday and Saturday at Keeneland, as Thoroughbred racing's "premier event" has not been postponed or canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to John Clay of the LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER. Fans will "not be allowed on the grounds this weekend," a decision the Breeders' Cup board made back in September, opting to "limit on-site attendance to participants only." All three Triple Crown races this year also "were held without fans." Breeders' Cup President & CEO Drew Fleming said that when it "became clear spectators could not attend the races at Keeneland this weekend because of COVID-19," numerous steps were "taken to provide TV and digital viewers 'the most robust on-site production of any horse racing event ever.'" There will be "over 80 television cameras covering the event," and a "'Contender Cam' which will be available at Breederscup.com and will have 14 individual views of each horse from the time the horse enters the paddock to when the horse enters the starting gate." Health and safety protocols "are in place." In an "important move, despite the obvious lack of revenue," the purses for this year's Breeders' Cup "are the same as last year" (LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER, 11/4).
