Celtics G JAYLEN BROWN received the NBA Cares Community Assist Award this season, saying for him it was “strange and a little bit awkward receiving recognition for being in the community and helping out." Appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," Brown said, "It’s a strange dynamic for me because my family and the people around me have always instilled that giving back is an obligation.” Brown said of starting his own foundation, “I started the foundation to positively affect young men and women through educational experiences, through athletics and also social programs. The name of the foundation is called 7uice and 7uice is a synonym for energy, and that’s what we’re trying to do, spread positive energy through the foundation, through the community, and through the world.” ELLEN DEGENERES presented Brown with a check for $10,000 for his foundation, telling him he is “just a good guy” (“The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” 10/20).

TALKING POLITICS: 76ers F TOBIAS HARRIS was "among three NBA players who sat down with Democratic vice-presidential candidate KAMALA HARRIS to discuss social issues in the first episode of 'Remaking America.'" Harris was joined by Trail Blazers G CJ MCCOLLUM and Jazz G DONOVAN MITCHELL. A "central theme of the 13-minute video was the importance of voting in the Nov. 3 election" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 10/21).

NAMES: When Warriors Senior VP/Communications RAYMOND RIDDER recently reached out to G KLAY THOMPSON asking him to "make good on a dying fan’s wish, Thompson didn’t hesitate." Thompson on Monday "had a video chat with DEBORAH WRIGHT, 62, who has metastatic breast cancer and has been told by doctors that she has two to six weeks to live." For about 25 minutes, Thompson talked to Wright "about her family, pets and love for the Warriors" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 10/21)....UConn agreed to "pay a total of just under $250,000 to seven women" after the U.S. Labor Department "found they had been underpaid when compared with men in similar positions." A "total of $249,539 will go to the women." UConn in an email "identified those employees by title as its women's associate head basketball coach (CHRIS DAILEY), the team's two assistant coaches in 2014 (SHEA RALPH and MARISA MOSELEY), the director of women's basketball operations (SARAH DARRAS) and the director of football operations (SARAH LAWLESS)" (AP, 10/20).

IN MEMORY: Former Michigan State AD MERRITT NORVELL died Monday in Lansing at the age of 79. Norvell was AD from '95-99. He was one of the first Black ADs in D-I history (DETROIT NEWS, 10/21).
