With Williams Gone, Reds, Castellini Need New Baseball Head

It is the general consensus that Williams left the Reds organization better than he found themGETTY IMAGES

Reds President of Baseball Operations Dick Williams resigned yesterday after 15 years with the franchise, and what matters for the team now is finding a replacement who can deal with Reds Owner Bob Castellini, and "make the club better," though the two "are not mutually exclusive," according to Paul Daugherty of the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. Williams "left the Reds better than he found them." Castellini "tends to value players for the people they can bring to the ballpark, not necessarily for the value they can bring to the long-term success plan." His "fervent desire to Win Now sometimes has stunted the team’s goal of winning consistently." Castellini "is a fan," and "sometimes, it can fog his vision." The Reds are, "in many ways, the prototypical small-money club." As such, what the club "should be doing now, in the wake of Williams’ departure, is asking themselves this: How do the Rays do it? Where does [the A's] magic come from?" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 10/8). In Cincinnati, Bobby Nightengale provides "some potential candidates" if the Reds "do fill Williams' position." These include: Reds GM Nick Krall, Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill, Yankees VP/Baseball Operations Tim Naehring, Brewers Assistant GM Matt Arnold and Phillies Special Assistant/Scouting & Player Development Johnny Almaraz (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 10/8).
