MLB Franchise Notes

In Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde wondered, "Could South Florida become a baseball town again?" If so, this is the Marlins' "script to start that journey." Any comeback "always involves results, not plotted process, considering the failed ideas and false starts from previous eras." The Marlins "can be the best story in baseball but still not the best in the local market. The Heat are." But this two-game sweep in Chicago "tells of what's coming" (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 10/4).

GET READY: In Toronto, Gregor Chisholm wrote the Blue Jays are "about to embark on what could arguably be described as one of their most challenging off-seasons." The club is "prepping for the start of free agency without knowing where its home ballpark will be located next year," and it will be "attempting to secure additional funding from the deep-pocketed, but often frugal, ownership group Rogers Communications following a season in which no tickets were sold and financial losses are reported to be steep." The challenges presented to Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins and his front-office staff -- both internally and externally -- "are enormous" (TORONTO STAR, 10/4).

BRICK BY BRICK: In Chicago, Lamond Pope wrote the White Sox "crossed two major items off their rebuild list." They had their first winning season since '12, and they returned to the postseason for the first time since '08. Despite a late-season free-fall, the White Sox "turned a corner in their rebuild, no doubt." Pope noted the majority of the roster is "in line to return." The expectations "will be higher" for the club in '21 (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/4).
