The Pac-12 football schedule "will begin with a morning start on Nov. 7 -- Arizona State at Southern California" at 9:00am ET, according to the AP. The conference schedule released on Saturday includes "eight Friday games, at least one every week after the first weekend of the season." Each Pac-12 team has "six opponents scheduled." The Nov. 7 opener "kicks off at 9 a.m. local time." The conference has been "toying with morning starts to boost nationwide exposure." TV partner Fox has "emphasized its noon Eastern time window." Arizona State-USC "will be Fox's 'Big Noon Kickoff' game, with its pregame show coming from the Los Angeles Coliseum" (AP, 10/3).

WILL EARLY STARTS WORK? Pac-12 Senior Associate Commissioner of Football Operations Merton Hanks said the conference "tried to give our institutions every opportunity to impress not only our peers within the conference, but the CFP and our bowl partners moving forward." But in L.A., J. Brady McCollough wrote, "Maybe that time slot will prove to work for ratings and become a conference staple, but you know what really puts college football fans in front of their televisions? Marquee games between familiar powerhouses, of which there are none" (L.A. TIMES, 10/4). In San Jose, Jon Wilner wrote the Pac-12 "wanted to protect the top teams to increase the possibility of an undefeated champion and create the most attractive matchup for the title game." A source said that additional 9:00am games "have not been ruled out." ESPN and Fox "will broadcast every game for the first six weeks, plus the conference championship on Dec. 18." A source said, "One of our priorities was exposure. To ensure all 36 games (through six weeks) were on ESPN and Fox was too good to pass up." Wilner noted that leaves "zero games for the Pac-12 Networks, at least until Dec. 19 (Week Seven)" (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 10/4).

NICE MOMENT: In Portland, John Canzano wrote Saturday was a "nice moment" for the Pac-12 Conference. It "got all dressed up and took the stage." The conference "acted like it belonged in the national discussion." Canzano: "I'd like to see more of that" (Portland OREGONIAN, 10/4).
