Univ. Of Iowa Not Bringing Back Cut Sports, Even With Football's Return

Univ. of Iowa AD Gary Barta and President Bruce Herrald said that even with the return of football, the four sports the school planned to eliminate still are "not coming back," according to Pat Forde of SI.com. On Aug. 21, Barta "announced that the school was eliminating four sports at the end of the 2020-21 school year," which followed the Big Ten postponing the fall football season. But now, fans and athletes of those sports "ask a perfectly logical question: If football is back and the budget hit that was attributed to its postponement ... is lessened, are the eliminated sports back as well?" Barta said, “The short answer is no." He added, "Maybe our deficit goes from 75 million to 60 million. The deficit we will take on this year -- I hate to use the word catastrophic, but it really is catastrophic.” Forde noted Iowa was "already poised to cut sports before the Big Ten postponed fall football due to forecast losses related to the COVID-19 pandemic." On Aug. 14, the school "informed regents that it had identified the four sports it would cut," and a week later, "those cuts were announced." A group called Save Iowa Sports "raised pledges" totaling $1.65M, and they would "like to create a funding model that can be taken to every school facing similar situations -- and there are many of those" (SI.com, 9/23).
