MLB Cardinals Reassessing Baseball Operations Costs

The MLB Cardinals put some programs on "indefinite hold and began rethinking their minor-league staff and scouting approach" as part of layoffs and non-renewals that "began this week to reduce costs in the baseball operations office," according to Derrick Goold of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. At least 12 members of the Cardinals' minor-league coaching staff "did not have their contracts renewed" for '21, and several in the front office "had their positions eliminated or revised." The team had "more than two dozen staff reductions on the business, ballpark, and baseball sides of their operation this week." All of the moves were done as a "response to the steep reduction in revenue, most notably from zero ticket sales" in '20, and the "enormous questions facing the team" in '21. The Cardinals had "avoided pay cuts and layoffs for full-time employees in the baseball operations department during the season," but decided they "could not do the same as their budget for 2021 nears." The club also put their Cardinal Core program "on pause." Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said that to reduce costs, the team had to "reassess that growth and ways to streamline, or adjust." He added that his "'hope' is not to reduce that staff" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 9/20).
