The Suite Life: Seeded Players Getting Use Of Boxes At U.S. Open

The suites have outdoor seats where players can hang out to take in the actionUSTA

The 64 seeded players in the U.S. Open singles draws, along with unseeded past champions, were assigned corporate suites at Arthur Ashe Stadium "to use as personal lounges while they remain in the Grand Slam tournament," according to Howard Fendrich of the AP. The suites have outdoor seats "where players hang out to take in the action." Madison Keys said, "Having a place that I can just go and there's no one else and I can just sit there by myself is really nice. I spend most of my time on-site there." Fendrich noted players who "lose a match also lose their suite after that round ends," though players entered in doubles can "hang onto the spot until they're also eliminated in that event." The suites are being "cleaned and disinfected, then awarded to the highest-ranked player -- based on the entry list, not the current WTA and ATP lists -- remaining in the departing player's event" (AP, 9/3). In DC, Ava Wallace noted the converted suites "have a practical purpose" as well. The locker rooms at Ashe Stadium, which "usually hold up to 300 people, have been limited to 30 at a time, and there's a time limit on access." Additionally, the capacity of the "player dining room was also reduced from 300 to 50, with rented tables and chairs outdoors making up the difference" (WASHINGTON POST, 9/3).
