NFL Notes: 49ers Still Determining Appropriate Crowd Noise Level

NBC SPORTS BAY AREA's Jennifer Lee Chan notes the 49ers "have a little more than a week to determine the level of crowd noise they want to hear" when facing the Cardinals in their home opener on Sept. 13. Coach Kyle Shanahan and his staff are "trying to determine what will be most ideal for their team." Shanahan said, "There's a few things to experiment (with) and the rules aren't official yet either. Hopefully we'll get that solidified this week" (NBCSPORTSBAYAREA.com, 9/3).

SOME CONCERNS: In N.Y., Ken Belson reports four Democratic members of Congress yesterday "sent the NFL a list of questions about the race-based benchmarks being used in the landmark concussion settlement to determine whether retired players who filed claims for dementia were eligible for monetary awards." The lawmakers' questions "stem from two legal actions filed last week in federal court by two former NFL players who said they had their claims denied because the benchmarks 'explicitly and deliberately' discriminate against hundreds, if not thousands, of Black players who apply for payouts" worth as much as $3M (N.Y. TIMES, 9/3).

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS? SI.com's Albert Breer wrote he does not think it is "impossible games get moved to Friday night," but he "would say it's pretty improbable." Moving games "would mean hurting the NFL's signature Sunday product, and so I'd think the payoff to do it would have to be significant." Breer wrote he is "against moving games to Saturday, but I can certainly understand the logic -- the appetite for football on that day, if college football were gone, would be huge, and could help to mitigate the looming revenue shortfall." Breer: "Is there the same thirst for games to go to Friday night? I don't see it, and I'm not sure the networks would make it worth the NFL's while" (SI.com, 9/2).
