New Subway Ad Shows "Lighter Side" Of Bill Belichick

Subway released a new ad starring Patriots coach Bill Belichick that "demonstrates Belichick's lighter side while also poking fun at his most infamous fashion choice," according to Dakota Randall of NESN.com. The 30-second spot was released yesterday via YouTube. Leaked photos from the set of the commercial shoot in July "showed Belichick scarfing down a hoagie, something he doesn't do in this ad," so maybe this clip is the "first in a series of ads starring the NFL's preeminent curmudgeon" (NESN.com, 9/1). In Boston, Nicole Yang notes Belichick in the ad portrays himself and "easily convinces a stranger to toss his meal in favor of a footlong sub." He then "takes a pair of scissors to the man's suit, snipping off the sleeves so that the finished product mimics his iconic hoodie" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/2).

VARIETY SHOW: In Columbia, TJ Macias writes Belichick showed that "perhaps, people were sleeping on his personality." Twitter "went wild after Subway dropped its newest commercial featuring America's favorite grump" (Columbia STATE, 9/2). In Providence, Eric Rueb wrote Belichick's debut spot was "pretty solid as far as fast-food commercials go." Maybe it is "not Dave Chappelle funny and probably won't win Belichick a Clio ... but it should get him some internet karma and perhaps a joke or two the next time the Patriots have a film session" (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 9/2). In Massachusetts, Chris Mason wrote Belichick is "pretty good" in the commercial (MASSLIVE.com, 9/1). WFAN's Chris Lopresti: "It's very short, to the point, very Bill Belichickian. Not hilarious, but it’s fitting for Belichick." WFAN's Gregg Giannotti: "It didn't suck, but I wanted it to be better. It was one of those things where the anticipation ruined it for me. ... There was an expectation it was going to be great because he’s never done anything like this before" (“Boomer & Gio,” WFAN, 9/2).
