Sources: NBA Puts Media Account Into Review, Issues RFPs

The NBA has put its media business "into review," and an RFP has been "issued to several holding companies," with strategic advisory firm MediaLink managing the review, according to sources cited by Lindsay Rittenhouse of AD AGE. Incumbent Publicis Media's Spark Foundry "declined comment." But a source said that it is "unlikely that the agency will compete to defend." The NBA sent its media planning and buying duties in '15 to Publicis-owned Starcom Mediavest Group, which included agencies Spark Foundry and Starcom. Sources said that the business has "since been handled by Spark Foundry." Rittenhouse noted on the creative side, the NBA has "worked with Steve Stoute's Translation" since December '14. However, a recent campaign featuring actress Issa Rae "aimed at hyping up the league's restart to its season, came from the NBA's in-house team and Cartwright," the L.A.-based, WPP-backed shop launched by Keith Cartwright in June (ADAGE.com, 8/31).
