College Football Cancellations Leave Fall Ad Revenue In Doubt

The possibility of no college football this fall leaves nearly $1.7B in "ad revenue hanging in the balance," and "could in turn drive up the NFL and NBA’s revenue," according to Jason Lynch of ADWEEK. Kantar Media found college football last season brought in an estimated $1.69B in "national and spot ad revenue." A Disney ad sales spokesperson said, “We have been working with our programming teams and our advertising partners on scenario planning.” In recent weeks, buyers had been "increasingly pessimistic about the likelihood of college football being played this fall," and many "began to develop contingency plans." Some "advised clients who invest heavily in college football to buy up NFL inventory, as an insurance policy." That "would put them ahead of the anticipated rush on NFL inventory for college football advertisers who are now left in the lurch." Postponements will "send marketers scrambling for other options -- with the NFL and NBA the two likely scenarios" (ADWEEK.com, 8/11). Author Jim Miller said, "It's a brutal loss. I was speaking to people at ESPN ... and this one is really hurting. College football is a big part of ESPN's DNA." He added, "ESPN has spent over $20 billion on college football in less than a decade. They're losing not only advertising money, but also eyeballs that you count on to justify the cable bundle" (BYERS MARKET, 8/12).
