ESPN Debuts Fast-Paced Broadcast For First PGA Championship

ESPN has "shot out of a cannon in its first year broadcasting" the PGA Championship, debuting an "unimaginably fast-paced, high-action product that's hardly comparable to anything else in golf television," according to James Colgan of GOLF.com. In the first five hours of its live coverage Thursday on ESPN+, the network "delivered (and then some) on the hopes of golf fans beleaguered by disappointing coverage from golf's television mainstays." ESPN has "introduced new, illuminating perspectives through drones, super slow-motion cameras and innovative putting angles," and -- "most importantly -- it's been joyously, unceasingly fast." Scott Van Pelt and Sean McDonough "have been fantastic stewards, while analysts like Andy North have adjusted well to the challenge of using even less time to color between the lines" (GOLF.com, 8/6).

MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: In Chicago, Jeff Agrest writes the "biggest boon for viewers" watching the PGA Championship is that, for the "first time on CBS, 50% of the national commercial spots will be 'two-boxed,' with a commercial airing in one box and CBS' 'Eye on the Course' in the other." CBS' Jim Nantz said, "I'm going to talk as a fan here. The 50% 'Eye on the Course,' that's a big deal. If you start adding up how many shots that you're going to be able to see now that you don't have to come back and get on tape, probably you're talking about an extra six or seven shots per commercial break that you're going to be able to show. That could be an extra 35, 40 shots per hour or more" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/7).

TWITTER REAX: No Laying Up's Chris Solomon: "It's premium coverage I realize folks are upset that the only option to watch the tournament is to pay, but they really are delivering a big time product. Can get three screens going, and the SVP/Duval combo is fantastic." Golf News Net's Ryan Ballengee: "This is the full 180 from the TNT days. What fun to see golf on the golf telecast!" Golf.com's Luke Kerr-Dineen: "I cannot get enough of these camera angles on putts." Pittsburgh Golf Now's Matt Gajtka: "The best golf viewing early in a tournament is a featured group on a streaming service like ESPN+ or PGA Tour Live. Feels like you're walking with the players and you can get to know the course."
