Michigan AD Budgets For At Least $61M Less In Annual Revenue

Football season-ticket holders were told there will be limited or no fans attending games at Michigan StadiumGETTY IMAGES

Univ. of Michigan AD Warde Manuel said that the athletic department has budgeted for $61M "less in revenue this year and could increase to triple digits if a decision is made not to play sports this year," according to Angelique Chengelis of the DETROIT NEWS. Manuel on Thursday in a letter to football season-ticket holders said that since there will be "limited or no fans" attending the five football games at Michigan Stadium this fall, the department is "'navigating a historic financial challenge' and has implemented cost-cutting measures." Manuel in June "presented to the UM Regents a projected budget deficit" of $26.1M. Manuel in the letter said that there "will be a 28% reduction in team and game expenses," about $10.9M, mainly because of "reductions in team travel, recruiting, and equipment." Operating expenses "will be reduced 25%," about $3.8M, because of "reductions in administrative travel and expenses of hosting home sporting events" (DETROIT NEWS, 8/7). In Detroit, Orion Sang notes UM already has announced that there "will not be football season tickets available this season." Manuel in his letter "asked season ticket holders to consider 'converting your previous preferred seat contribution/season ticket payments towards a tax-deductible gift to the Champions Fund.'" The athletic department is "offering several benefits to those who convert payments to a tax-deductible gift" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/7).
