Criticism Continues For NFL Owners Johnson, Snyder Amid Allegations

Some believe it will be tough for Woody Johnson to return to his front-facing role as Jets ownerGetty Images

Reactions continue on the situations surrounding NFL Jets Owner Woody Johnson and Washington Owner Dan Snyder, and the new allegations of racism and sexism "threaten to undercut the league's efforts to promote itself as having learned from past failings," according to Ken Belson of the N.Y. TIMES. The NFL has "taken strides to repair its image as being insensitive to issues facing women and people of color," but the league "continues to be confronted by an uncomfortable reality: Its efforts can be undercut by reports of toxic behavior at the tops of its franchises" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/25).

FACE OF THE FRANCHISE: In N.Y., Mike Lupica wrote Johnson "does about as well representing his country abroad as he has representing" the NFL. It is "more than just hideously entitled tone-deafness." Johnson "clearly has about the same understanding of what is happening in his own country as he once had picking most of his general managers and football coaches." NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell "may surprise us in this area one of these days." But "until he does, it’s probably unwise to expect him to ever sanction" the likes of Snyder or Johnson the "way he often does players" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/26). USA TODAY's Jarrett Bell wrote, "The NFL cannot let this slide without digging deeper. Not now, not after Commissioner Roger Goodell and other league power brokers have made so much noise in recent weeks about values that include fighting against racism and sexism" (USA TODAY, 7/25). NBC SPORTS' Peter King writes it is "going to be tough" for Johnson to return to his front-facing role as owner of the Jets (NBCSPORTS.com, 7/27).

STRONG WORDS FOR SNYDER: In Boston, Ben Volin wrote in "classic Snyder fashion, he's still bungling the process." Snyder has "shown an embarrassing lack of preparation for having to change the name." Only this past week did he "hire a new chief marketing officer to handle the new team name and logo." But he "still can't get out of his own way." In hiring his new CMO, Snyder "may have run afoul of the league’s Rooney Rule, which was expanded this year" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/26). Also in Boston, Tara Sullivan wondered, "Any doubt anymore that Daniel Snyder had never put any real thought into changing the name of his NFL franchise?" With new coach Ron Rivera confirming on "CBS This Morning" that the decision on a new name "could be 12-18 months away, he appears to provide plenty of evidence that no real work on this had been done to date" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/25). YAHOO SPORTS' Terez Paylor wrote under the header, "NFL’s Latest Ownership Controversy A Stinging Reminder Of Where The League Is Really Lacking" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 7/25).
