Edmonton CFL Team To Change Name From Eskimos

CFL sponsors in recent days have expressed a desire to see a name changeEskimos

The CFL Edmonton Eskimos “will be changing their name” after reaching an “internal decision,” according to sources cited by TSN’s Ryan Rishaug. An announcement “could come as early as next week” (TWITTER.com, 7/16). Edmonton's decision comes after the team earlier this month announced that a “review of the nickname was ongoing” and comes after the Washington NFL team earlier this week began “ceasing the use of its nickname.” CFL sponsors in recent days “have expressed a desire to see a name change." Insurance company Bel Air Direct, which also sponsors the 50/50 draw at Commonwealth Stadium, said that it "would drop its sponsorship should a name change not occur.” Additionally, Edmonton exclusive online casino and sporting gaming partner Sports Book Interaction “officially asked the team to change its name.” The nickname has been in use since ‘49 (TSN.ca, 7/16).

NEWS COMES AFTER SHAREHOLDER MEETING: In Edmonton, Gerry Moddejonge notes the reports of the name change come one day “after holding their annual general meeting with media and shareholders via video conference.” A source said that Washington’s move this week was the “nail in the coffin” for Edmonton. Team President Chris Presson on Thursday met with Edmonton city Councillor Aaron Paquette and the team name “was front and centre.” Public outcry for a new name “has been ramping up since the team’s official Twitter feed painted a hypocritical target on its back in calling for an end to racial inequality following the killing of George Floyd” (EDMONTON JOURNAL, 7/17).
