MLBPA Could Hire Jeffrey Kessler To Litigate Grievance Against MLB

The MLBPA has "discussed hiring noted sports lawyer Jeffrey Kessler to litigate a contemplated grievance against clubs accusing" MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and management of "failing to act in good faith to complete the longest season economically feasible," according to Ronald Blum of the AP. Sources said that a grievance "has not yet been filed and an agreement with Kessler has not been finalized." Union officials have "asked for a broad disclosure by teams of financial relationships with regional sports networks and real estate ventures adjacent to ballparks and could ask" arbitrator Mark Irvings to "order document production." Blum noted Kessler was a "leading lawyer retained by the NFL Players Association in the Freeman McNeil lawsuit that led to a jury in 1992 striking down the NFL's limited free agency system." Kessler also has represented the NBPA, the NHLPA and MLS players. He currently is representing the USWNT in its "pending discrimination suit" against U.S. Soccer (AP, 7/14).
