Red Sox Debut Piped-In Fan Noise During Intrasquad Game

The crowd noise experiment is still in the early stages, so it is unknown how it will affect TV broadcastsGETTY IMAGES

The Red Sox' latest experiment -- "pre-recorded piped-in fan noise" -- played throughout the club's intrasquad game Friday afternoon, "simulating the sound of a real crowd," according to Julian McWilliams of the BOSTON GLOBE. Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said of the addition, "I liked it a lot. It was some real noise that will get better with the timing of it, but I think the noise with even nothing going on is really good. So, we're experimenting with the loudness of it." Roenicke said that the noise was "sometimes too loud for the players," as in certain instances, it was "difficult to communicate on the field." McWilliams noted the piped-in crowd noise is "in its early stages, so, NESN still doesn't know how it will broadcast games." The sound "more than likely will interfere with the broadcast." Once this experiment gets more definition and becomes a plan, NESN "will adjust accordingly" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/11).

SEAT FILLERS: In Boston, Kevin Paul Dupont noted at least five MLB clubs -- the Giants, A's, Brewers, Royals and White Sox -- "have committed to filling up some of their empty seats with cardboard or plastic facsimiles of fans." Dupont: "Our field of dreams has slipped into theater of the absurd." The Red Sox last week were "still assessing the 'fake fan' field as the weekend approached." Red Sox CMO Adam Grossman said that he is "intrigued by the idea and likes how it might dovetail as a fund-raiser for the franchise's various charitable efforts" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/12).
