Indians Name Change Likely Wouldn't Come Until '22 Season

Paul Dolan plans to engage with leaders from various tribes and Native American interest groupsgetty images

The Indians' final decision on changing their name "may not be made until the 2022 season," but the reality is that the name is "going to change," according to Terry Pluto of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. Indians Chair & CEO Paul Dolan "does plan to engage with leaders from various tribes and Native American interest groups." But in order for the name to remain, they would "have to be pushing Dolan to keep it," and that is "not likely to happen." Nor is it "likely the team will settle for something such as 'The Tribe' or anything else with a Native American connection." As such, the new name will be "something fresh, something they can make uniquely their own." The team would "love to find a name that could be embraced by those who advertise with the team." Many members of the organization have "reached the point of believing it’s 'the right thing to do too,' and that’s beyond the business aspect." Still, this is a "complicated and time-consuming process." One possible plan "would be for the Indians to try to make a final decision about removing the name in the next few months." Pluto: "I expect that to happen" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 7/10).
