SBJ Unpacks: Industry Veteran Dell Speaks On Sports' Return

On the most recent episode of “SBJ Unpacks: The Road Ahead,” our Terry Lefton speaks with sports industry pioneer Donald Dell about the state of sports and the Black Lives Matter movement.

On if is a link between Americans being “cooped up” and the fervency and immediacy by which people took to the streets to support the Black Lives Matter protests:
Dell: There is a direct tie-in to that, but I also really believe the movement is a lot stronger and deeper and more meaningful than people really yet totally understand. In other words, a lot of people were pent up and they were furious at what happened in Minneapolis and that was the catalyst, but a lot of people that came out were peaceful marchers that really felt strongly that there should be a change in our society as far as racial equality.

On the state of sports amidst a global pandemic:
Dell: I’ve never seen anything where there are literally today no live sports, with the possible exception of some soccer -- football -- from Europe you can put on television. So when you do something like the Michael Jordan documentary, "The Last Dance," which was brilliantly timed, and have that many episodes, (you) still get great ratings because people want to see something.

On the difficulties and risks for leagues attempting to return to play:
Dell: If this spike really hits again hard like it did back in March, then you’re going to have things falling over into 2021 -- January, February, March -- and that prohibits a lot of other things and then you never really know when you’re going to start a season for a major sports franchise.
