A's President Wants Group To Retract Letter Opposing Ballpark

Stricter environmental standards were agreed to for the site, including LEED-Gold certified constuctionGETTY IMAGES

A’s President Dave Kaval "responded angrily to a letter from the Sierra Club to the Oakland City Council expressing opposition" to the team’s proposed ballpark project at Howard Terminal, according to Susan Slusser of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Kaval said that he "wants the Sierra Club to retract the letter because of inaccuracies, including the contention that the A’s have 'sought shortcuts and exemptions from environmental laws.'" Kaval indicated that the team is "going through a full environmental impact report, which has been paused because of the coronavirus shutdown." Slusser notes as part of streamlining the process, the A’s "agreed to stricter environmental standards on the site, including the construction being all LEED-Gold certified and full greenhouse-gas neutrality." The A’s have "committed to 50% local offsets." Kaval said that that will be an "investment of millions of dollars in the West Oakland community" and is something "no other major projects in the state have included." Slusser notes the Sierra Club’s letter to the City Council "advocated for the A’s to build" a ballpark at the current Coliseum site (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/30).
